Newborn Jaundice — What Is Common and When It Needs Checking

Jaundice makes the skin or eyes look yellow and is common after birth, but timing, level, feeding and the baby’s condition determine whether testing or treatment is needed.

Reviewed and updated:

The short answer: Contact your maternity or newborn team if you notice yellowing. Jaundice in the first 24 hours, worsening yellow colour, poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, dark urine or pale stools needs prompt assessment.

Why it happens

Bilirubin is produced as red blood cells break down. Newborn livers take time to process it, so levels can rise after birth.

How it is assessed

Clinicians consider the baby’s age in hours, gestation, feeding, risk factors and a measured bilirubin level. Looking alone cannot determine severity.

Common questions

Does sunlight treat newborn jaundice?

Do not use direct sunlight as treatment. Babies who need treatment receive measured clinical care such as phototherapy.
