Newborn Wet and Dirty Nappies in the First Week

Nappy output changes rapidly in the first days and helps clinicians assess feeding and hydration. Meconium should transition in colour while wet nappies generally become more frequent.

Reviewed and updated:

The short answer: Track nappies if your maternity team asks, and use their day-by-day expectations. Too few wet nappies, persistent dark stools, blood, very pale stools or a baby who feeds poorly needs advice.

The normal transition

The first stools are dark meconium. As milk intake increases, stool colour and texture change. Urine output also rises over the first days.

Why nappies matter

Output is one piece of the feeding picture alongside attachment, swallowing, alertness, weight and clinical review. No single nappy count proves everything is fine.

Common questions

Should I log every newborn nappy?

A short log can be useful in the first days, especially if feeding or jaundice is being monitored. Follow your care team’s plan.
