Hospital Bag Checklist — What to Pack for Labour, Birth and Baby

Pack the essentials first: documents, comfortable labour clothes, toiletries, chargers, going-home clothes, nappies and a safe car seat plan. The best bag is organised, labelled and easy for your partner to navigate.

The short answer: Aim to have a basic hospital bag ready by around 36 weeks, earlier if your care team says birth may come sooner. Use three small groups — labour, recovery and baby — rather than one overfilled bag.

For labour

  • Maternity notes or hospital paperwork
  • Loose clothing or a large T-shirt
  • Water bottle with a straw
  • Lip balm and hair ties
  • Phone charger with a long cable
  • Any comfort items agreed in your birth preferences

For recovery

  • Comfortable high-waisted underwear
  • Maternity pads
  • Front-opening top or feeding-friendly clothing
  • Toiletries and any regular medicines
  • A loose outfit for going home

For your baby

  • Two or three vests and sleepsuits
  • Nappies and wipes or cotton wool
  • Hat and weather-appropriate layers
  • Blanket for the journey
  • Correctly fitted infant car seat if travelling by car

Make the bag usable for your partner

Use separate packing cubes or labelled bags. Your partner should know where the documents, charger, snacks and baby’s first outfit are without asking you during a contraction.

Common questions

When should I pack my hospital bag?

Many families aim for around 36 weeks. Pack earlier if you have a planned birth, twins, previous early birth or advice from your maternity team.

Do I need everything on online checklists?

No. Ask your birth unit what it supplies and keep the first bag compact; extra items can stay in the car or at home.
