can I eat runny eggs?

With Caresafe with conditions

In the UK, runny or soft-boiled eggs are safe during pregnancy if they carry the British Lion stamp (or are Laid in Britain eggs) — these hens are vaccinated against salmonella. In the US and for non-stamped eggs, cook eggs until both white and yolk are firm.

why it matters

The concern with runny eggs is salmonella. The UK's Lion Code vaccination programme has made salmonella in stamped eggs vanishingly rare, so the Food Standards Agency cleared runny Lion eggs for pregnant women in 2017. US flocks aren't universally vaccinated, so the FDA still advises fully cooked eggs.

how to have it safely

Check for the red Lion stamp on the shell or box (UK). No stamp — or anywhere the vaccination status is unknown — cook eggs until the yolk is firm, or use pasteurised egg products.

worth knowing

  • UK: runny yolks, soft-boiled and even raw Lion-stamped eggs (in fresh mayonnaise or mousse) are considered safe.
  • US (FDA): cook eggs until yolks and whites are firm; choose pasteurised eggs for runny preparations.
  • Duck, goose and quail eggs aren't covered by the Lion scheme — always cook these thoroughly.
  • Eggs at restaurants or abroad: if you can't verify the source, ask for them well done.

common questions

Can I eat a soft-boiled egg with dippy soldiers while pregnant?

In the UK, yes — as long as the eggs are British Lion stamped. The vaccination programme behind the stamp makes salmonella extremely unlikely.

What about eggs in restaurants?

Most UK restaurants use Lion eggs, but it's fine to ask. If the source is unclear — especially abroad — order your eggs fully cooked to be safe.
