Newborn essentials: only what you'll use

A no-nonsense list that skips the marketing.

Baby shops are designed to convince you that you need everything. You don't. Newborns need feeding, sleeping, changing, warmth and love — almost everything else is optional or can wait. Here's a grounded list of what genuinely earns its place in the first weeks.

Feeding

If breastfeeding: a couple of nursing bras, breast pads, nipple cream, and maybe a feeding pillow. If bottle-feeding (whole or in part): bottles, slow-flow teats, formula, and a way to sterilise. Most other gadgets can be bought later if you find you want them.

Sleeping

Changing and clothing

Out and about

A properly fitted, age-appropriate car seat is non-negotiable. A pram or sling gets you outside. Beyond that — fancy toys, shoes, a wardrobe of outfits, most “must-have” gadgets — can wait until you know your baby and your routine.

Borrow and accept hand-me-downs freely, but always buy a car seat new (so its history is known) and follow current safe-sleep guidance for the cot.
