Talking to your bump
Your voice is your baby's first language lesson.
Talking to your bump can feel a little silly at first — and it's one of the most worthwhile habits you can build. Long before birth, your baby is tuning in to the rhythm and melody of your voice, and it becomes the sound they trust most when they arrive.
Why your voice is special
Your voice reaches your baby both through the air and through your body, so it comes across more clearly than any other sound. By the third trimester, babies can recognise it — newborns turn toward their mother's voice and are soothed by it within hours of birth. Talking now lays the very first groundwork for language and bonding.
Easy ways to do it
- Narrate your day — “I'm making tea, then we'll go for a walk.” Content doesn't matter; the voice does.
- Read aloud — a book, the news, anything with rhythm.
- Sing, even badly — repeated songs become familiar and comforting.
- Invite your partner in — a second familiar voice is recognised at birth too.
- Pause and notice — your baby may answer with a wriggle.
It's for you too
These small moments make the pregnancy feel real and build a bond before you ever meet face to face. There's no script and no wrong way — a minute here and there is plenty.
If talking to the bump feels forced, don't force it — playing music, humming, or simply going about your day with your baby along for the ride works just as well.
