symptoms at 33 weeks

Deep pelvic ache
The baby's head pressing into the pelvis strains loosened joints, especially after walking. Frequent sitting breaks, warm baths, and a support belt spread the load.
Numb patches on the bump
Stretched skin and compressed surface nerves can leave small numb or tingly areas on the belly. It is harmless and resolves after birth.
Increased clumsiness of hands
Overnight fluid retention can make hands stiff and fumbling in the morning. Gentle fist-clenching exercises before getting up loosen them.
Braxton Hicks in clusters
Tightenings may come in evening clusters after busy days. Water, a bath, and lying on your left side should settle them — if they organise into a regular pattern before 37 weeks, call your midwife or maternity unit.
Feeling too hot to sleep
Peak blood volume makes nights sweaty. A cooler room and layered bedding you can shed help more than pushing through.
Strong urge to nest
A sudden drive to clean, sort, and prepare is common now. Enjoy it, but delegate ladders, heavy lifting, and chemical-heavy jobs.

gentle tips

  • Pack hospital bag including snacks, phone charger, and slippers.
  • Sleep propped up and on the left side.
  • Eat dates daily in the last weeks — linked to easier labor.
  • Track movement patterns daily.

your week 33 checklist

  • Install the car seat in the car you will actually use for the hospital trip and have the fit checked.
  • Cook and freeze at least four extra meals for the newborn weeks.
  • Decide on your baby's sleeping arrangement and set up the crib or bedside sleeper.
  • Book your week 34 and 36 appointments if they are not already in the diary.

What actually helps swollen feet at 33 weeks?

Elevation above heart level for twenty minutes several times a day, compression socks put on before getting out of bed, staying hydrated, and regular ankle-pumping movements are the combination that works. Reducing salt slightly helps some people, but do not restrict fluids — dehydration makes swelling worse. Sudden swelling, or swelling with headache or vision changes, is different: call your midwife or doctor the same day.

Why do my baby's movements hurt my ribs now?

With less room to manoeuvre, stretches and kicks land against your ribs and organs with real force, especially if your baby is head-down with feet up. Sitting tall, side-stretching away from the pressure, and spending time on all fours can shift a wedged foot. Painful movements are normal at this stage — but remember it is the pattern of movement, not the strength, you are monitoring; reduced movements always mean contacting your maternity unit immediately.

Is raspberry leaf tea worth taking before labour?

Raspberry leaf is traditionally used from around week 32 to tone the uterus, but the research evidence for meaningful benefit is weak and it is not suitable for everyone — including some people with previous caesareans or pregnancy complications. If you want to try it, discuss it with your midwife first and introduce it gradually. No tea replaces the things that demonstrably matter: movement awareness, appointments, and rest.
