15.3 cm (6.0") · 240 g (8.5 oz)

Halfway through pregnancy is around the corner. Tiny taste buds work, and the baby can react to bright light beyond your belly.

this week's highlights

  • Reacts to bright light
  • Lanugo covers body
  • Hearing is sharp
  • Vernix thickens

how your baby looks

Covered in fine fuzz (lanugo) and a thick layer of vernix. Both will mostly disappear before birth but help protect skin in the meantime.

what's happening in your body

You may feel pulled, achy ligaments from the bump's weight. Skin changes — darkening of the linea nigra, freckles, or melasma — are common.

symptoms at 19 weeks

Round ligament pain at its most noticeable
The uterus is growing quickly and the ligament twinges can be sharper this month than any other. Brief and movement-triggered is the reassuring pattern.
Skin pigmentation changes
The linea nigra down your belly and facial melasma may be darkening now. Daily sunscreen limits melasma; both fade in the months after birth.
Hip pain when sleeping
Side-sleeping with loosened joints can leave hips aching by morning. A pillow between the knees and a mattress topper are cheap, effective fixes.
Congestion and ear fullness
Swollen mucous membranes can make ears feel blocked as well as the nose. It is harmless, if odd, and resolves after delivery.
Mild swelling of feet and ankles
Gradual, symmetrical swelling by day's end is normal in mid-pregnancy. Sudden or one-sided swelling, or swelling with headache, needs a prompt call to your midwife or doctor.
Braxton Hicks beginnings
Some people notice occasional painless tightenings of the bump from around now. They are practice contractions — irregular, mild and settling with rest.

gentle tips

  • Use sunscreen every day to reduce melasma.
  • Pair iron-rich foods with vitamin C for better absorption.
  • Sleep on your left side with a pillow under the bump.
  • Take short breaks if standing for long periods.
  • Talk to your provider if leg cramps wake you at night.

your week 19 checklist

  • Attend the anomaly scan if it falls this week
  • Start your baby-kit list and note what can be borrowed or bought second-hand (everything except the car seat and mattress)
  • Look into cord blood, birth preferences and hospital tour options — early research beats late scrambling
  • Establish a bedtime stretching routine for hips, calves and lower back

what to expect next

The anatomy scan is usually around now. You may learn the sex at the scan, plus get reassurance about organ development.

The anatomy scan is usually around now. Use sunscreen every day to reduce melasma. Pair iron-rich foods with vitamin C for better absorption. Sleep on your left side with a pillow under the bump.

What are Braxton Hicks contractions and when do they start?

Braxton Hicks are irregular, usually painless tightenings of the uterus — practice runs that tone the muscle without opening the cervix. They can start as early as 16 to 20 weeks, though many people only notice them in the third trimester. Unlike labour contractions they are irregular, do not intensify, and ease with rest, water or a position change; regular painful tightening before 37 weeks warrants a call to your midwife or doctor.

Why is there a dark line appearing down my belly?

That is the linea nigra — a line of pigmentation running from the navel toward the pubic bone, drawn out by pregnancy hormones stimulating melanin. It appears in most pregnancies to some degree, is completely harmless, and fades over the months after birth. Sun exposure can darken it, which is one more argument for daily sunscreen.

Is it normal for one side of my bump to hurt when I turn over in bed?

Usually yes — turning over stretches the round ligaments abruptly, producing a sharp catch on one side that fades within seconds. Rolling more slowly, bending your knees, and supporting the bump with a pillow all help. Pain that is constant rather than fleeting, severe, or accompanied by bleeding, fever or contractions is different: call your midwife or doctor.
