Pain relief options in labour

From breathing to an epidural — a calm overview.

There's no “right” way to manage the pain of labour — only what's right for you, on the day. Knowing the options in advance takes away a lot of fear, because you'll understand what's available and can change your mind at any point. Here's the menu, from gentlest to strongest.

A word on the epidural

It's very effective and widely used. It means more monitoring, a drip, and often a catheter, and can make the pushing stage a little longer — but it doesn't increase the chance of a caesarean. You can usually still move and change positions with a modern “mobile” epidural.

What's available depends on your birth setting and how your labour unfolds — and you can absolutely change your mind mid-labour. Talk your options through with your midwife antenatally so nothing feels like a surprise.
